What we do

FoIM is a registered charity (number 1184000) that exists to promote the wider knowledge, appreciation and enjoyment of the art and collections housed in the Museum's three sites within Ipswich, and to help with acquisitions and exhibitions. We support a fascinating and unique museum complex, Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich Museum and the Old Art School Gallery.

There are about 300 FoIM members, Family Members. and many Angels and Corporate Angels, whose donations, membership fees and funds raised from special events are given to the charity - which then supports the Museums.

“We may be a relatively small organisation but we have big dreams. The Friends play a large part in making the Museum and Mansion even greater attractions for the whole country. FoIM have donated over £200,000 over recent years, which has assisted the Museums Service to purchase and conserve art, including paintings by local artists, a Viking pendant, sculpture, jewellery, porcelain, the Mason family portrait by Constable, and much much more.

The Museums Service has turned every £1 we have given into £7 of purchasing power, and our contributions help with matching bids to other funding bodies. We were successful in 2019 in obtaining a Government Equalities Office Grant for the Women 100 Exhibition which was a huge success.

By joining The Friends of the Ipswich Museums, becoming an Acquisition Angel, or by becoming a Corporate Member, you will enable us to continue to play a full part in supporting the Museums Service, acquiring more treasures and attracting more exciting exhibitions in collaboration with major Museums like The Tate, and V & A.” Richard Wilson, Chairman FoIM

Doris Zinkeisen’s painting of daughters Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone and her niece, Julia Heseltine, acquired with the help of FoIM funding.

Our Museums need your support now more than ever. Our Members have been steadfastly loyal during the past years and we have been able to assure them that there is marvellous work going on behind the scenes. We have reported on this work, and on important and exciting acquisitions, news and Friend’s event in our Newsletters, which we aim to publish three times a year.

Every penny counts to keep our three Museums delivering for visitors of all ages, not only in Suffolk, but from across the country who are attracted by the Museums’ outstanding exhibitions, conservation work and exhibits.  We were delighted and thankful that the public gave donations into our special DONATION BOXES, and contactless payment station in the hall and the Gallery at the Mansion. Such generosity is very much appreciated.

Our portable seats for those who need them have proven popular. The Friends continue to donate thousands of pounds towards specific projects and you can read more details of our projects in our Newsletters. Friends receive a printed copy of the Newsletter, but previous editions can be accessed here.
