Colour, Shape and Pattern Preview

Venue - Wolsey Art Gallery at Christchurch Mansion

Cost - Friends £7, Guests £10 (includes tea/coffee and cake)

Join curator Emma Roodhouse as she unveils the Mansion’s newest exhibition, Colour, Shape and Pattern (on from 24 May 2025 to 22 February 2026). This exhibition will showcase Ipswich’s amazing array of modern artworks alongside ten loans from the Fitzwilliam’s renowned print collection, including items by René Magritte and David Hockney.

Other leading artists featured include Elizabeth Frink, Bridget Riley, Alberto Giacometti, Edgar Degas, Henry Moore, Henri Matisse, Ceri Richards, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Graham Sutherland, Ben Nicolson, Terry Frost, Margaret Mellis, Valerie Thornton and Barbara Hepworth.

The exhibition will also feature a new mural created by Suffolk artist Lily Hammond (see front cover image). Lily is a painter, designer and public artist working from her studio in Ipswich. She graduated with first-class honours in Illustration and now runs Uwu Studio. Her passion for colour and pattern feeds into her vibrant designs that you can see in her eye-catching murals decorating the walls of the town. You can find out much more about Lily and her work here: www.uwustudio.co.uk.

Visitors will be encouraged to explore the Mansion to find more colourful glass, ceramics, patterned wallpapers and shapely furniture and then add their own designs and artwork to an ever-evolving gallery.

As IBC have decided to introduce charging for exhibitions, this will be an opportunity to enjoy the artworks, hear expert introductions to them by the superb Emma Roodhouse, and enjoy a piece of cake and a cup of tea in the Great Hall afterwards for a very reasonable donation to the Friends. Booking via contact@foim.org.uk. See p23 of your Spring newsletter for payment details, and please add COLOUR for reference.
