John Day - Online Talk

John Day: Suffolk Artists of the 19th century, with a focus on George Rope of Blaxhall’s animal pictures

Venue - Online via Zoom

Cost - £5 per connection (includes multiple users)

After the success of our previous years’ online talks, we will be repeating the format this coming January. As we can’t usually hold ‘in-person’ events during the darker winter months, we are pleased that we can stay connected with our online talks. This time John Day of the East Anglian Traditional Art Centre in Wickham Market will be sharing with members a close-up view of one of the highlights of the Mansion’s Animals in the Art Gallery exhibition – George Rope’s wonderful animal pictures.

John will talk about the paintings that he has loaned for this exhibition, focusing on Rope (1846-1929) but also including works by his sister the sculptor Ellen Mary Rope as well as other notable 19th-century Suffolk artists. George lived in Blaxhall near Wickham Market and was educated at Ipswich School where his interest in natural history evolved prior to a year studying in London under landscape and animal painter William Webb (1790-1856) and subsequent extensive travels in Germany, Holland and Norway.

Please confirm by emailing contact@foim.org.uk and we will send you the meeting ID and password. On the night you will be admitted from the virtual waiting room, and please initially mute your microphone, though of course there will be an opportunity to ask questions later.
