The Invention of British Art - talk and book signing
Venue - Christchurch Mansion

Time - 6.30 for 7pm
The Friends of the Ipswich Museums are very excited to be presenting a special extra event this autumn – a talk and book signing by leading art historian and BBC star Bendor Grosvenor.
Bendor will take us on a journey through British art as he introduces his new book The Invention of British Art (published on 10 October). Britain has produced some of the world's most famous artists and paintings. But what made British art ‘great’? Was it the individual genius of artists like Gainsborough and Constable? Or were their careers shaped by a distinctly ‘British’ society, culture and history? And if so, why has that distinctiveness been overlooked, and why have we ignored so many of the characters who helped create the story of British art?
Dr Bendor Grosvenor is a noted art historian specialising in Old Masters and British art. Best known from the two BBC series Britain's Lost Masterpieces and Fake or Fortune?, he has discovered a number of hugely important paintings by prominent artists including Gainsborough, Van Dyck, Rubens, Titian, Beale and Lawrence.
Beautifully illustrated throughout, The Invention of British Art is a provocative and captivating survey of the glories of British art. Copies will be on sale on the night at the special price of £30 (RRP £40) and this is a marvellous opportunity to obtain personalised signed copies just in time for Christmas…
